As an ancient and classical art form, Odissi dance is deeply connected with traditional Indian culture. As part of the dance training, students will learn about Indian culture, spirituality and traditions. These traditions are practiced within Jyoti Kala Mandir and provide depth and integrity to the dance training. Students approach the training with an attitude of humility, service and respect towards the dance form, their teachers and their fellow students. Jyoti Kala Mandir brings worlds closer with two centers in India and the USA, encouraging a cross-cultural experience where Indian dancers and American dancers can mingle.

For beginning students, performance opportunities are available at school open houses and some outside performances in both countries. DISTANCE LEARNING
We are now adapting our ancient and traditional art and teaching style to the 21st century by offering Odissi dance classes with Guru Jyoti Rout via Skype. This enables students who do not live near the San Francisco Bay Area or Bhubaneswar, Orissa, to have direct instruction and guidance from an established Odissi Guru. For more information, please contact us.
EXAMINATIONS
Jyoti Kala Mandir has annual examinations each year in India and USA. During the examinations, all students have a chance to demonstrate their knowledge of theory and practical in their subject and receive a certificate of their achievement.

Vishnu-devananda Yoga Vedanta Center
Sivananda Tradition
The Vishnu-devananda Yoga Vedanta Center is Jyoti Kala Mandir’s sister organization and is also affiliated with the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers. Our center was founded in May, 2001, and offers yoga, meditation, and Vedanta philosophy classes for enhancing physical and mental balance and developing inner peace. The classes follow a traditional approach (the Sivananda tradition), as taught by our late Yoga Master Swami Vishnu-devananda, a world-authority on Hatha and Raja Yoga.
Recently we moved to Fremont and offer yoga courses on Sunday mornings. Additional classes to be scheduled in the near future.
Beginner Yoga Courses
A step-by-step introduction to the theory and practice of yoga, including yoga Asanas (postures), Pranayama (breathing exercises), Savasana (relaxation), yogic diet, positive thinking, and meditation. It is recommended for those who are new to the practice.
Philosophy
Bhagavad Gita and Vedanta philosophy classes are offered for clarifying our understanding of ourselves and the world, how to cope with them, and how to transcend our limited notions about them.

Current Schedule
- Sundays 8:30 - 10:00 AM Bhagavad Gita - Vedanta and yoga philosophy and their application in our daily lives
- Sundays 10:00 - 11:30 AM Intermediate Yoga and Meditation
- Wednesdays 7:00 - 8:30 PM Mixed-Level Yoga (Series starts 9/6/17)
Retreats
We offer monthly one-day retreats at our center in Fremont, as well as annual retreats in Uttarakashi, Himalayas.
Sanskrit Courses
Sanskrit is the ancient language of the seers and sages of ancient India. For those interested in deepening their understanding of the philosophy, mantras and chants, having a basic understanding of the Sanskrit language is very helpful.
Instructor
Founder/director of our center is Gajananam, a direct disciple of Swami Vishnu-devananda. He has been teaching yoga for nearly 25 years, has served as the director of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center in New York City in the 90s, and has taught at Sivananda yoga teacher training courses and retreats around the world. Gajananam is Guru Jyoti Rout's husband.
All classes are taught in the spirit of Karma Yoga or selfless service. Funds received are used for running the center and propagating the practice.
